EU-Reduced rating for e-books draws closer

For some time, there has been a proposal to bring the VAT liability of digital books and publications into line with physical copies.Currently, physical books and other certain publications can be reduced rated for VAT purposes, whereas identical digital copies must be taxed at the standard rate.

A European Commission proposal to approve the reduced rating of digital copies was approved by 48 votes to 1 by the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee this week, with a final vote on the proposal scheduled to be held in the EU parliament at the end of May or start of June.
